FDA Announces Temporary Suspension of Rotavirus Vaccine (Rotarix)
On March 22nd, 2010 the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended that all health care providers suspend the use of the Rotavirus vaccine manufactured by Glaxo Smith Kline (GSK), called Rotarix. Margiotti & Kroll Pediatrics would like to assure all of our patients that this suspension does not affect patients that have received the rotavirus vaccine in our office. The rotavirus vaccine used in our practice is manufactured by Merck, under the name RotaTeq, which is not affected by this suspension. Please reference the link below to the article on the CDC's web site for additional information:http://www2a.cdc.gov/HAN/ArchiveSys/ViewMsgV.asp?AlertNum=00311.

Voluntary Recall Announced for Intranasal H1N1 Vaccine
On December 22nd, 2009 the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced a "Non-Safety-Related Voluntary Recall" on certain lots of MedImmune H1N1 Intranasal Vaccine. At this time it is apparent that some of the vaccine administered by our practice was affected by the recall. The CDC has announced it is not necessary to recall patients who have received this vaccine, however in our continued effort to inform our patients of matters relating to your child's health, we are communicating this information to you. Margiotti & Kroll Pedaitrics is following the recommendations from the CDC to not re-vaccinate children who have recieved this vaccine. The recall relates to a number of vaccines that have recently, or will soon, drop below accepatble potency levels. Again, there have been no concerns relating to your child's safety if he/she has alreday received this vaccine. Please reference the link below to the article on the CDC's web site for additional information: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/sprayrecall_qa.htm.

On December 15th, 2009 the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced a "Non-Safety-Related Voluntary Recall" on certain lots of Sanofi Pasteur H1N1 Pediatric Vaccine for children 6-35 months. Following an investigation by Margiotti & Kroll Pediatrics, we have established that this voluntary recall does not affect any of the lots received in our offices. We are dedicated to providing your child with the best possible pediatric care in the region and we will communicate any additional information relating to this recall as it becomes available. Please reference the link below to the artice on the CDC's web site: http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/vaccination/syringes_qa.htm.
Seasonal Flu Vaccines Available for Medical Assistance Patients
Margiotti & Kroll Pediatrics has received a very limited supply of state supplied SEASONAL influenza vaccines for children eligible for the "Vaccines for Children" program. If your child is covered by a state insurance such as Health Partners, Keystone Mercy and Americhoice, you can now schedule an appointment for a flu vaccine. Please keep in mind that there still may be a wait for an appointment due to the volume of patients that are requesting immunizations this season.
Intranasal H1N1 and SEASONAL Flu Vaccines are now available in all offices
Margiotti & Kroll Pediatrics has received an additional private supply of SEASONAL intranasal influenza vaccine. This is in addition to the supply of H1N1 intranasal vaccine that we received last week. This form is also commonly referred to as intranasal or "flu-mist". Due to the fact that this is a live form of the vaccine there are some specific restriction criteria that would make your child unable to receive it.
You should not get the intranasal influenza vaccine if:
- you have received either nasal flu vaccine within the past 28 days or plan to receive it within the next 28 days
- you are allergic to eggs .
- you are younger than 2 or are 50 years and older
- you are pregnant
- you have a weakened immune system
- you have a long-term health problem such as:
- Heart disease, lung disease, asthma, kidney or liver disease, metabolic disease such as diabetes, anemia and other blood disorders
- you are under 5 with asthma or one or more episodes of wheezing during the past year
- you have certain muscle or nerve disorders (such as cerebral palsy) that can lead to breathing or swallowing problems
- you are in close contact with a person with a severely weakened immune system
- you are on long-term aspirin treatment
- you are moderately or severely ill
- you have had a life-threatening allergic reaction to an influenza vaccine in the past
Please note that if you meet any of the criteria above you will be ineligible for the intranasal form of the SEASONAL and H1N1 vaccine. This does not necessarily preclude you from the injectable form of either vaccine when they become available. We have not received any injectable H1N1 or regular SEASONAL flu vaccine yet. Our order has been placed through the PA Department of Health for the injectable H1N1 vaccine and it is expected to arrive no later than mid-November. We are also awaiting our shipment of private injectable SEASONAL flu vaccine for children ages 3 and up.
Please remember, you may not get two live intranasal vaccines on the same day or within 28 days on one another.
Important H1N1 Vaccine Update
On October 1st Margiotti & Kroll Pediatrics placed it's order to recieve the influenza A/H1N1 vaccine. We do anticipate delivery by the middle of November. Currently the only vaccine that has been made available is the nasal live attenuated influenza vaccine(LAIV). Once we begin to receive our order and are able to begin vaccine administration an e-mail notification will be sent out to our patients that are registered on our ListServ. If you have not already done so, we strongly encourage you to sign up here.
